Massive beer selection including a large selection of aged beers and beers from closed breweries. Literally a "Mom and Pop" operation, service can be a bit slow when they are crowded.
Tram stop Mechelseplein.

My favorite place in Belgium to drink beer and one of my favorites in the world. Always something interesting to try.

At its peak, the Kulminator was one of the best beer cafes in the world, with a fascinating collection of aged beers and a draft list full of great choices. Things are a little different now as legendary owners Leen & Dirk grow older. Firstly, you can't just wander in - you must ring the bell and ask to be allowed in. If Dirk says it's already too busy then you'll be turned away. It's his bar so it's his prerogative. You should tell him you'd like to taste (not drink) some beers, and that you have cash euros with which to pay. Note, the large table at the front has a limit of 8 people, so if it's already 'full' you won't be able to join any friends who may be sitting there. If you get in, you'll find the draft list is now exclusively lambics. No bad thing, of course, but I do miss the amazing Avec Les Bons Voeux, Bush Noel and other classics they regularly used to have on draft. You'll also find that Dirk's 'office' is taking up more and more space, so the number of customers admitted is necessarily quite limited. Also some of the aged beers may not be available when you visit - last time we were there we could only choose from what you can see through the cellar window on the ground floor. Note the relatively new daytime only opening hours, and also note that it is strictly cash only.
